Instead, I have this nagging voice in my ear saying, “Pay off your credit card debt. Be debt free. You’ll be so happy when you don’t owe anyone money, especially guys in suits who sit in giant offices and don’t give a shit about you.”
ME: “But…It’s like spending money on nothing! My money is going nowhere. I’m getting NOTHING IN RETURN.”
Nagging voice that gets a little naggier every time: “But that was never your money to begin with. Credit cards are NOT free money, and no matter how many times you stay up until 11:11pm to wish they were, it’s not going to happen.”
ME: But…I want to buy a new laptop! And a scooter! And, navy blue ballet flats! And a European vacation! And new work clothes! And pastel colored skinny jeans to wear this summer! And new books! And a new bookshelf to hold all my new books and the old books my current bookshelves can’t contain! And…a million other things besides NOTHING, which is what I’ll be able to afford if I pay off my debt.
Please tell me that being responsible and paying off my debt is the right thing to do, because right now all I’m feeling is selfish and sad that I won’t get to ride THIS around the city this summer.
P.S. I bet you can guess who the nagging responsible voice is. I'll give you a hint. His name starts with a D and ends with an.

That's not true that your money is being spent on nothing.
It's being spent on the things you already have. That's the thing about credit cards.
That's why credit card debt is a bitch. Because you still have to pay for it eventually, and with interest rates, you usually end up paying more in the end. I thought the same way you did until I had $7,000 in credit card debt. Now I have $2,900. Never going back. Usually the money I get I spend half on stuff I want now, and half on stuff I already have. That way I'm not totally deprived. Repayment is slower, but yeah, can't live out those navy ballet flats.
That scooter is so dreamy. But not having any debt is way dreamier. I have never had a credit card of my own because I know I will end up in the Debt Boat. And, although I do love boats, that is one boat I do not want to be in. And it definitely sucks when I think of all the beautiful things I could have or do if only I had a credit card... like a scooter, or a boat, or this really cute dress at Anthro that I want.
The thing you have to remember now is that you DO have this money rolling in now, and it will continue to roll in even after you pay off those credit cards. So yes, you should pay for the stuff you already bought before you go buying new stuff like a laptop or a scooter. (But I'd still spring for the ballet flats. I mean, a girl's got to have shoes on her feet.)
I know I'm paying for stuff I already have, but it just FEELS like I'm paying for nothing since I don't have anything new to show for it. That's why I haven't actually used a credit card to purchase anything over $100 since 2007! Most of what I'm paying off now is what I stupidly racked up in college.
I was in the same boat about a year ago, when, after a year of being under/unemployed, I finally got a decent job. I wanted to blow my new-found money on new toys and gadgets!
In the past year I've payed off half of a credit card, an auto loan, and a sizable portion of my student loans. I sort of developed a reward system where I would buy myself a nice little something if I payed off a big chunk of my debt. Maybe you could go on a mini shopping spree if you pay your credit card company $500. Or for every $100 you pay off, you could put another $100 in a savings account to put towards a scooter.
Oh my god you need that scooter so you can I can ride around on it and I can giggle like a kid. I hold on tight :) I think you should take a little time and enjoy this new cash flow because you've earned it. Don't go crazy but enjoy it for now and then get on a savings plan
Ugh, I battle with this same issue inside my head all the time. I just love clothes! :)
I'm in the same position you are. I ran up my credit card in college, and now it frustrates me every month when I have to put a large sum of money on it. I try to look on the bright side and pretend that I'm just putting money into my emergency burrito fund.
Ahhh I want a scooter so bad! A red one. I'm an enabler so I'm just going to hush and not say get it.
OK I will fix you right here right now. So when I was in college I had 2 jobs one summer. I was like SWEEEET. So I made a ton of cash. So then I get back to school and I'm like I have so much money I can buy Egypt. But I didn't buy Egypt, I bought a scooter. A red one that was so gorgeous and hot I wanted to marry it (Illegal in the state of arizona) I had it for like 3 weeks before I got a ticket, and then another 3 weeks before it was stolen. So basically I wasted my 1600 bucks on a memory. So pay off the debt, scoot later. And let me know and I will buy a new scoot with you. Ok? Ok cool. Bestys for life.
